Transnistria is an unrecognized state located along the banks of the Dniester river in Eastern Moldova and Western Ukraine.  It became an autonomous region after the civil war with Moldova 1990-92.  Despite functioning as an independent economy from Moldova, it's not recognized by the United Nations (who still see the region as part of Moldova).  The people of Moldova ethnically identify themselves as Romanian, while Transnistrian's see themselves as Russian.

This series of images was made around the time of both regions national independence days.  Moldova August 27th, Transnistria September 2nd.

I wanted to explore how two nations umbilicaly linked celebrate their independence days, how does a nation which does not exist celebrate it's independence and identity, compared to that of it's recognized neighbor.
